On his 80th birthday, Carmichael said “I’m a bit disappointed in myself. I know I could have accomplished a hell of a lot more…I could write anything any time I wanted to. But I let other things get in the way…I’ve been floating around in the breeze.”
Carmichael died of heart failure in Rancho Mirage, California on December 27, 1981.

Hoagie's the guy that wrote "Lazybones" and we DID listen to him last night—he's the guy with the song about his big lady, hugging her with chalk, and finding another guy. He also wrote "Georgia on my Mind" and worked a lot early in his career with Louis Armstrong.
