Study Scripture
Genesis 2:18
Then the Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suiteable for him."
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.
Matthew 7:13-14
Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
1 Peter 4:7-8
The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer. Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.
2 Peter 1:5-9
Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins.

The Album Leaf
This band was featured on the Moog Documentary (playing Micro Melodies) and, thirsting for more, I'm satisfied. The music has encouraged creative ideas. . .

Out with the old, in with the lower credit card debt.
Last night I pushed a handful of books to eBay after trying unsuccessfully to sell them locally. Here's a set of links to the lot:
Wilfrid Cumbermede
Warlock O' Glen Warlock
St. George and St. Michael
Bolanyo
Free to Serve
The Children's Book
Romantic America
At the Back of the North Wind
The Princess and the Goblin
At The Back of the North Wind (copy 2)

Mother Goose in Prose
The most impressive out of the lot is this beast (pictured above, Mother Goose in Prose), which is currently listed on other sites for $2200-$3200. I expect to draw less than $1k from it, but just in case the right buyer is out there, have a "Buy it Now" option on it for $1500. Fingers crossed. This was a big book, a first for the illustrator Maxfield Parrish, and an early Frank Baum title, in which appears the story of a young girl named Dorothy before the Wizard of Oz had been penned.

Photo-a-Day: Des Moines Farmers Market

It's a few months back, but a good picture, and with the warm weather we're having, you'd almost believe the flowers were fresh still today. Read more after the jump.

Homecoming

An entertaining game tonight which I almost missed because of site transitions and a desire to have this Friday evening quiet at home. I'm glad we went. Read more here.
Buchannie Anne, the Praying Mantis of Madison County

I'll try to keep up this photo-a-day idea. . .whether I capture the image on that specific day or not. See 10/4's entry (I had the idea yesterday), Buchannie Anne, here.

The Beatitudes
Matthew 5:3-12
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
"Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.
"Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

Tertullian on the Relation of Philosphy and Heresy
From de praescriptione haereticorum ("On the Rule of the Heretics")
Our system of beliefs comes from the Porch of Solomon, who himself taught that it was necessary to seek God in the simplicity of the heart. So much the worse for those who talk of a "Stoic," "Platonic" or "dialectic" Christianity! We have no need for curiosity after Jesus Christ, nor for inquiry after the gospel. When we believe, we desire nothing further. For we need believe nothing more than "there is nothing else which we are obliged to believe."

Justin Martyr on Philosophy and Theology
We have been taught that Christ is the firstborn of God, and we have proclaimed that he is the Logos, in whom every race of people have shared. And those who live according to the Logos are Christians, even though they may have been counted as atheists – such as Socrates and Heraclitus, and others like them among the Greeks.
. . . Whatever either lawyers or philosophers have said well, was articulated by finding and reflecting upon some aspect of the Logos. However, since they did not know the Logos – which is Christ – in its entirety, they often contradicted themselves.
. . . Whatever all people have said well belongs to us Christians. For we worships and love, next to God, the Logos, who comes from the unbegotten and ineffable God, since it was for our sake that he became a human being, in order that he might share in our sufferings and bring us healing. For all writers were able to see the truth darkly, on account of the implanted seed of the Logos which was grafted onto them. Now the seed and imitation of something which is given on the basis of a person’s capacity to receive it is quite different from that thing itself, of which the communication and imitation are received according to the grace of God.

I am the turkey slayer...
There are a lot of turkeys on Turkey Ranch Hill - as there should be since the hill is named after the famous blue-headed gobbler. But this morning was bizarre. It could be a sign, warning me not to eat turkey sandwiches before bed, which I did last night. But, more likely, it was simply a statement, a public service announcemnet if you will, on the utter stupidity of the pea-sized-brain bird. This I believe is the truth.
I am sure I hit two of the three birds that were out this morning on E bound Hwy 92 - all similar in size to the young turkeys pictured here. One, was napping in the road and two were flying to join him. I veered away from the sleeping bird but ended up swerving back when I noticed another flying directly into my windshield towards my face. I was shocked, jerked, and hit both birds simultaneously. Feathers...everywhere! I was sure I hit the two and wasnt sure about the third.

Upon inspecting my car - thank God there wasnt any real damage - there is evidence of a third bird. One big streak starting from the nose of the hood, up to the windshield where the other flyer hit and then flew off. Gross.
Albeit interesting and wierd, I do not enjoy my gift for plowing into fowl...
